The Pliability Of LP Gas

January 28, 2012

Numerous South Africans know LP gas as the gasoline that is released from smallish blue canisters that powers the braai on Saturday and very little else. So, then just what is LP gas? LP gas or Liquefied Petroleum Gas is a rather fantastic solution in a lot of ways. LPG is produced by polishing petroleum (a fossil fuel source) during this process of refining crude oil. It could also be extracted from oil wells as it comes forth from the soil.

LP gas is outstanding in that in a pressurized form (to facilitate storage and transportation) the propane and butane it contains can be ‘liquefied’ by way of a tiny bit of refrigeration or pressure. Therefore LPG may be easily carried in tankers because LPG requires +/- 250 times less volume as a liquid than a gas. The actual ratio between the volumes of the vaporized gas and the liquid form is dependent upon the formula (butane to propane) pressure, and heat. Since LPG evaporates quickly at normal temperature ranges and pressures it needs to be supplied in pressurized steel cylinders – those typical blue cylinders everyone knows in South Africa that fuels our braais or heating units. A thing to understand about LPG is that it is more heavy than air, so it will settle on floors or move down the stairs to a downstairs room. That situation can cause the downstairs room to be a fire hazard or in fact to suffocate any person in the basement. For legal reasons, however, LPG should be odored by the add-on of ethanethiol, which will straight away give off that typical odor of gas leaking. LPG in reality is energy in a container that could be somewhat small – think about the butane canisters available for purchase to power small gas lamps etc. So as a product it is adaptable, it is fast as it promptly releases energy, it is clean and essentially it is portable, making its application range rather diverse in that it could be utilized in cooking, heating, refrigeration and lighting. LP gas, thus, makes for the absolute ideal camping companion.

LP gas in South Africa is ‘watch dogged’ by the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association of Southern Africa, which supervizes the safety and business compliance components of the gas. The Association also oversees the buying price of LP gas. The Association recommends that customers only use a registered installation technician of appliances, like stove tops and heating elements, always use a certified gas vendor, always use a tested and approved gas solution and importantly examine the seal on a cylinder to match the brand of the cylinder. Don’t purchase unmarked cylinders

There are of course also other ways to use LPG other than household uses. In modern times as alternatives to petroleum is sought to drive cars and trucks, LPG also plays its part in this mission. It is also increasingly used as a propellant in aerosol applications in response to the whole question of traditional aerosol propellants adding to the Earth Warming catastrophe through the Ozone layer damage brought on by these chemicals, and for the same reason it is also being employed in refrigeration as a refrigerant.

As can be gleaned from the above LPG is a outstandingly flexible item with some exciting properties.
